What's the Route?
Twin Falls to Ketchum is 81 miles via Highway 75, running roughly an hour and forty minutes each way without stops, and the road follows the Big Wood River up into the Wood River Valley, so the scenery earns the drive even before you count the construction delays. One current note is worth flagging before you go. The Idaho Transportation Department has an active construction project on Highway 75 south of downtown Ketchum. Lane closures are in effect, and you'll hit traffic shifts during peak commute windows. Leave Twin Falls by 7 a.m. on Saturday to stay ahead of the pinch, or plan a relaxed 9 a.m. departure and accept the extra time.

The Four Stops
Stop 1: Long-Term Parking First, Everything Else After

Land the Ascent in one of Ketchum's long-term unrestricted lots. The City of Ketchum designates two of them, the public lots at Washington Avenue and 1st Street, and at Leadville Avenue and 6th Street. Both are on-street or lot spaces without a two-hour cap, while the short-stay street spaces in the core blocks are capped at two hours by posted signage. Park in the long-term lot once, and walk the whole downtown from there. For a full Saturday with a large SUV, that's the move.
September timing works in your favor here. Ketchum's winter overnight parking ban (vehicles off certain downtown streets between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., November 1 through May 1) doesn't apply in September, so weekend timing is clean right now.
Stop 2: Town Square, Main Street, and the Galleries
Ketchum's downtown is genuinely compact, so from the Washington Avenue lot the gallery district and Hemingway Memorial sit a short walk away, and you'll find the Sun Valley Center for the Arts in the same walkable core. Plan two to three hours here on Saturday morning. Bring the light-layer jackets out of the cabin. September highs in Ketchum run in the mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit, but the valley cools quickly once you're in shade or at elevation.

The Ascent's 17.8 cubic feet behind the third row (with all rows occupied) is exactly right for organized day packs that stay out of the aisle. Use the underfloor storage compartment for the things you won't need mid-day. We appreciate that feature on the lot, since it keeps the cabin clean even when the family's been at it since 7 a.m.
Stop 3: Bald Mountain Trailhead and the Sun Valley Village Bike Path
Sun Valley Resort sits about one mile from downtown Ketchum, and the Village area connects to a multi-use bike path that runs both north and south along the Big Wood River, and that's where Ketchum earns its September reputation. The trail is paved and accessible. You'll find a comfortable distance here for mixed ages and fitness levels.
For the Ascent, this stop is a short drive from downtown, or a longer walk if you're feeling it after Stop 2. Trailhead-adjacent parking near the Village can fill on weekends, so don't assume you'll find a spot mid-morning. Better to leave the Ascent in the long-term lot and walk or ride the path from town.
If you're building a ride-and-hike day, fold one or both rear rows and stage the bikes before you leave home. The extra-wide rear door openings Subaru designed into the Ascent make loading full-size trail bikes much less of a workout than it sounds.
Stop 4: Galena Summit -- Optional, Worth It
This optional extension is what separates a good trip from a great one, and it earns the detour when you have daylight to spare. Galena Summit sits 25 miles north of Ketchum on Highway 75, at 8,701 feet, and it's the highest paved road in Idaho. Climbing up from Ketchum, the road takes on mountain-road character, not highway character. The Ascent's 260-horsepower turbocharged engine (Subaru's own spec) handles the sustained climb without complaint, and ground clearance of 8.7 inches gives you comfortable room on unpaved roadside pullouts.
Your payoff is a panoramic view of the Sawtooth Range from the summit. There are no services up there. Bring water and wind layers, because the temperature at the summit in September can drop 15 to 20 degrees from what you left behind in Ketchum. It's a there-and-back on Highway 75, roughly an hour round trip, and it closes the weekend on a note downtown Ketchum alone can't quite match.

Tweak It to Your Crew
Not every trip fills all eight seats, and with a smaller group you can fold the third row before you leave and open up 43.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind row two, and now you've got a different trip. A cooler, folding chairs, and paddleboards for the Big Wood River access points fit cleanly, no negotiation required. The Forester makes sense if you're a two- to four-person family who wants something more nimble in Ketchum's tighter lots. The Ascent earns its footprint when you're actually filling the rows.
Re-read the parking rules if winter skiing brings you back. The City of Ketchum's snow-removal ordinance pulls vehicles off designated downtown streets overnight between November 1 and May 1, and the long-term lots alternate by day of the week for plow access. Plan for that now so it isn't a surprise at midnight.
