Long before Subaru was an award-winning automotive company that produced some of the most revered, revolutionary, and safest vehicles ever, it was an aircraft manufacturer called Nakajima Aircraft Company, founded in 1918. After World War II, Fuji Heavy Industries was born and is now the Subaru Corporation as of 2016. The company also has an aerospace division that works with Boeing to build parts for the 777, 787, the upcoming 777X, the Japanese military, and more.

The Subaru aerospace company, as a developer of unmanned aircraft for the military, recently proposed new safety standards for drones, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approved the company’s drone safety proposal as the new global standard for all drones. The new standards outline six key steps for collision avoidance, which are becoming increasingly more important as drones get smaller and more widely purchased and used for hobbyists.

When evaluating the potential for new standards and guidelines, the ISO usually takes about three to four years to conduct research and review all the information. In 2019, Subaru put out their proposal at the annual ISO international conference in London. In October of 2023, Subaru was notified that its principles and guidelines to limit the number of safety issues and crashes with drones would become the official global standard for all drones. The six guidelines are constant obstacle monitoring, aircraft detection, evasive action, verification of approaching aircraft, resuming the original path, and continuing along the route.

Also, in 2019, Subaru invited the ISO subcommittee chair to witness a test of the new safety standards in use in real-world scenarios and use cases. Because of this demonstration, the chairperson advocated strongly for Subaru’s new guidelines. Akihiro Yamane, General Manager of Subaru Aerospace Engineering, said, “The approval process was long-winded, but someone needed to do it.”

Subaru, as an auto company, is well known for being one of the safest overall car brands on the market. It currently has the most consecutive Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the Ascent, Forester, Outback, Impreza, and Solterra, which is nearly their entire lineup of cars.

It comes as no surprise that a company determined to produce some of the safest vehicles money can buy would go out of its way to also work to create guidelines and standards for global safety initiatives with drones for all uses.
