Safety is one of the first things that come to mind when anyone thinks of a Subaru. As a brand with some of the most consecutive Top Safety Pick awards by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Subaru takes great pride in making sure that each of its current lineup and all-new vehicles is the safest it can possibly be for customers.

The 2024 Subaru Forester was given the highest safety mark of “Superior” in the newest IIHS rear crash prevention test. The IIHS tested eight small SUVs, and only four were given the “Superior” designation, including the Forester. Thanks to the state-of-the-art Reverse Automatic Braking system, the Forester is able to prevent rear-end crashes in various situations.

Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America, Inc., was asked about this latest safety mark and said, “Safety is at the heart of every Subaru vehicle, and I’m proud our Forester excelled in this test by the IIHS. Our vehicles are designed to not only keep occupants and nearby pedestrians safe but also to stay on the road longer and avoid costly repairs for our owners.”

“The rear AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) evaluation is designed to test how well these systems prevent the most common backing crashes. These are challenging scenarios in which a pole or another vehicle is behind you and off to the side. Meanwhile, you are backing up and sometimes turning at the same time,” said David Aylor, Vice President of Active Safety, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

There are three ratings in the rear crash prevention test: Basic, Advanced, and Superior. To conduct the test, the IIHS tests each vehicle 24 times at four mph and scores accordingly when the vehicle either avoids the target when reversing or slows the car down to one mph before making an impact. While low-speed accidents like these don’t usually result in significant injuries, it can be costly for insured motorists to pay for the damages caused by the collision. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), an affiliate of the IIHS, 30% of all accident claims in 2022 were for rear impacts costing over $4,000. However, some vehicles charge as little as $600 for a rear Automatic Emergency Braking feature.

The 2024 Forester is available with a plethora of safety features that can assist drivers in accident avoidance, such as EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which features Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Brakes, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. Automatic Emergency Steering is included on models equipped with Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The safety feature works with EyeSight and Blind-Spot Detection to assist with steering control to help avoid a collision at speeds less than 50 mph.
