The compact and subcompact crossover segments are two of the most popular vehicle categories in the U.S. In fact, of the top 20 best-selling models sold in the US in the first quarter of 2023, Nine of them were either compact or subcompact models, including among them the Subaru Crosstrek and Subaru Outback, with the Forester taking the 21st spot. According to Consumer Reports, the Subaru Forester and Crosstrek have the highest satisfaction ratings of any vehicles in these categories.

Communication goes both ways with Consumer Reports and its readers. With every issue, they provide information from their extensive research on a wide variety of products and services. In return, they survey their readers on their ownership experience of many of those products, especially automobiles. Their famed reliability charts of used vehicles and subsequent reliability predictions of new cars come from these surveys. In addition, every year, they ask a simple question: “Would you buy this car if you had to do it all over again?” From this, they determine the owner satisfaction levels of models across the industry.

If there is a bias to the sample, it is that these are all Consumer Reports subscribers, thus people who prioritize the satisfaction of the products they purchase. And of that particular type of consumer, the Subaru Forester has the highest level of owner satisfaction in the compact and subcompact crossover segments, followed immediately by the Subaru Crosstrek.

The Forester is also the publication’s highest-rated vehicle in the category, with a score of 87 points out of 100. It is described as delivering a satisfying combination of interior space, visibility, simple controls, comfortable ride, responsive handling, and commendable fuel economy. The rear seat and access are particular highlights.

The Crosstrek was ranked second among both categories. It was cited as delivering good fuel economy with its 29 combined mpg from the standard 2.5-liter engine. It was also described as delivering both impressive ride comfort and enjoyable handling. They point out that the EyeSight driver assistance system is not available with the manual transmission, but on the upcoming new Crosstrek, all models have both an automatic and the EyeSight system.
