With its sports car look, the Subaru BRZ is a cool car to everyone who sees one, and even more special when driving it. For a sports car that costs around $35,000 fully loaded, the BRZ has zero reason to be as great as it is.

Car and Driver has had a 2023 Subaru BRZ to test as a long-term vehicle, and they have happily put 30,000 miles on their car so far. It seems many of the staff will be sad to see it go when they send it back to Subaru at 40,000 miles.

The BRZ has been around since 2013 and has made the Car and Driver 10Best list four times, including three in a row from 2022 to 2024. It’s virtually impossible that a car with a starting MSRP of just $30,195 can be included in a discussion about a Porsche, yet here is the BRZ conjuring up the same feelings. As Car and Driver said, “The BRZ is 80 percent the fun of a Porsche for a third of the price …”

“Surprisingly, the BRZ’s relative practicality also continues to draw praise. Road trips to Virginia and Wisconsin have helped hold our car’s average fuel economy to 26 mpg—that’s 4 mpg better than its EPA combined estimate—and multiple drivers have commented on the ability of its cargo hold (aided by fold-down rear seats) to swallow more stuff than the Subie’s diminutive proportions would suggest,” said Car and Driver when talking about how well the car has performed for them over their 30,000 miles of long term testing.

All 2024 Subaru BRZ models feature the award-winning Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology as standard, even on models equipped with a manual transmission. Three trim levels are offered, including Premium, Limited, and the brand new unique tS with upgraded Brembo brakes, STI-tuned Hitachi dampers front and rear, and special badging and trim featured on the interior and exterior.

Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, and all trim levels feature a 2.4-liter BOXER 4-cylinder that produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.

  BRZ and GR86 are like twins, from what I have read. Do they have the same warranty? Which is the better choice. ?Colors available?

    They are pretty similar. However, some styling & interior features will differ between the two models. The BRZ is available in World Rally Blue, Crystal Black Silica, Magnetite Gray Metallic, Ignition Red, Ice Silver Metallic, Sapphire Blue Pearl & Crystal White Pearl. The general warranty details are about the same between the two, as well. We are partial to the BRZ, as it has, traditionally, been the more refined, upscale of the two.

  My 2013 Limited BRZ, has 264 thousand miles on it now, (time for oil change) and it’s a fun car to drive. Most of the mileage comes from me driving a hour to wor, every day. And I hope to get another 264 thousand miles, just as long as I keep up with the maintenance it can happen…Only thing is, just wish they would’ve put a 2.4-liter in all BRZs from the beginning

    That is a lot of miles! Would you be open to sending us some photos of the car & odometer, or stopping by so we could snag some & chat a little? Maintenance is key to keeping a vehicle running reliably for mile after mile. It would have been great if they had a 2.4L in them from day 1, the 2.5L didn’t start to see Subaru engine bays until the 2019 Ascent. So far, yours is the highest mile BRZ we have heard of, how high will it go??
