Recognizing Women in Automotive History

Celebrating Women’s History Month at Twin Falls Subaru

Women’s history and automotive history actually have a lot of intersection points. There are some everyday technologies that your vehicle makes use of that are the result of innovative women. Did you know that the first manual windshield wiper was patented in 1903? Did you also know that it was a woman, Mary Anderson, who is responsible for that patent? It was also a woman who manufactured an automatic windshield wiper beginning in 1917.

The point is, women are responsible for a significant portion of automotive history and history in general. Unfortunately, their stories often go under-told. For March, which is Women’s History Month, we hope everyone takes some time to explore such stories and honor the women who had a significant impact on our world.

Here at Twin Falls Subaru, we thank the many women who came before us in the automotive world. For example, Margaret Wilcox patented the vehicle cabin heater in 1893 (where would we be without it). There was also Florence Lawrence, who created the vehicle turn signal in 1914. These are just a few women out of many who helped shape the cars we drive today. Needless to say, the automotive world would look very different if it weren’t for their efforts and ingenuity.
