International Women’s Day is a yearly celebration of social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women across the globe. This day also recognizes the achievements made towards women’s equality and is important in raising awareness through education to advance towards positive change.

Although International Women’s Day initially took place well over a century ago with gatherings of over one million supporters, it was officially recognized as a holiday after female workers in New York City marched in protest of unfair working conditions and wages on March 8, 1957.

Forging ahead a few decades, each year on March 8th, there is a new campaign focus or theme that is celebrated in various ways, including organized events, rallies, and gatherings. This year’s theme is Embrace Equity. “Equity isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have.” Gender equity, equal opportunities, is still a great need in society today. This need can only be met through increased participation in activism. We can all do our part to help achieve social, economic, cultural, and political advancement of women.
