Twin Falls Subaru wants you to know that the BRZ has earned a place on Car and Driver’s 10Best list. 2024 marks the 3rd consecutive year the BRZ has been named on the Car and Driver 10Best list.

“To be recognized by the experts at Car and Driver three years in a row is incredibly high praise,” said Subaru of America President and COO Jeff Walters. “The exceptional value and feeling they found in the BRZ coupe is part of Subaru’s DNA.”

Requirements for Car and Driver 10Best candidates include having a starting MSRP of under $110,000, being a new or significantly changed model, or, as in the case of the BRZ, having won their category for the previous year. Since its 2022 redesign, the BRZ and its Toyota GR86 mechanical twin have been on the publication’s 10Best list for affordable Sports Cars.

However, Car and Driver is quick to point out that the sports car genre runs counter to most current automotive trends of front-drive SUVs, massive horsepower, and EVs. “Small, light, naturally aspirated, and manually shifted, this delightfully analog duo (BRZ and mechanically identical Toyota 86) flies in the face of many current trends, and they’re all the better for it.”

They also point out that the BRZ “was often just as quick through the challenging sections as more powerful and more expensive contenders—some vastly so. With their lithe handling, faithful steering, predictable behavior, and plentiful feedback, the GR86 and BRZ encourage you to push harder.”

The BRZ and its twin are powered by a Subaru-designed 2.4-liter flat-4, producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The engine is naturally aspirated (non-turbo or supercharged) and drives the rear wheels through either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic. A TORSEN® limited-slip rear differential is standard on all models. The BRZ weighs just 2,820 to 2,883 pounds, depending on the grade and equipment.

The BRZ is admittedly a niche vehicle. Though there are rear seats, it is effectively a 2-seater. For the sake of delivering pure sports car dynamics, it eschews the wet weather traction optimization of Subaru’s otherwise ubiquitous symmetrical all-wheel drive. But for commuters who drive alone or with just a single passenger, rarely use the trunk for much more than groceries, and consider driving a source of enjoyment, they won’t find a better choice than the BRZ.
